Literacy

The literacy for this week is set out below. Each day should be made up of 4 short literacy activities:

1. Handwriting (in the work book provided)

2. Phonics - Read Write Inc videos ( Ruth Miskin Training - YouTube )

3. A reading activity (read the wonderful stories from home or one of the online books in the reading book page)

4. A fun literacy activity based on a theme (our home learning theme this half term is going to be traditional tales)

You can pick and choose when to do them and they do not have to be done in any particular order.

The Three Little Pigs Activity 1 - Listen and talk about the story

Do you know the story of the Three Little Pigs?

It is a very exciting story about 3 Little Pigs and a BIG BAD WOLF!

Listen to the story below and then try and answer some of the questions.

Have a little think now. Talk to someone or even your teddy.

What was your favourite part of the story? Why?
What other stories have you read with a character like a wolf?
What is the moral of the story?
How would the pigs have felt during the story?

What happened first?

Which house was built first?

Which house was built second?

Which house was built third?

What happened next?

What happened in the end?

Can you have a go at sequencing the story using the sheets below?

Now talk the story through with an adult.

The Three Little Pigs Activity 3 - Describing a character

We are really focusing on language this week and the choice of words used by the author.

Can you remember what an author is?

By the end of next week, we will have written a character description of the wolf!

Listen to the story again and really look at the pictures and listen to the words, particularly about the wolf. Pause the story and talk about what is happening. How are the pigs/wolf feeling? What do they look like?

Words that describe things are called adjectives.

Can you use adjectives to describe 4 things about the wolf?

What is his fur like?

What are his teeth like?

What is his behaviour like?

How does he feel?

The Three Little Pigs Activity 4 - Hot seating

Read the story again and think of some questions that you could ask the wolf.

If you have an adult helping you, then take it in turns to ask questions and answer questions pretending that you are the wolf. If you do not have an adult to help you, ask a teddy or toy a question and answer it yourself.

You could ask...

Why did you blow the houses down?

How did you feel when you were blowing the house down?

Why are you so grumpy?

The Three Little Pigs Activity 5 - Writing about the wolf

Today we are going to look at writing down adjectives (describing words).

The Big Bad wolf was a very mean wolf and the police wanted to catch him. They needed a special poster created to help spot him when he was out and about. This poster is called a Wanted Poster.

Can you create your own Wanted Poster for the Big Bad Wolf using adjectives to describe what he looked like?
