 Food, Glorious Food

Have a look at the pictures below:

What stories are in the pictures?

Have you got some of those story books that you could  enjoy reading? Or can you find some links online?

Can you retell some of those stories?

What are some of your favourite phrases or words from the books?

What are the links between these stories?

What do they have in common?

Did you notice that all of those Fairy Tales have food in? Take a look again and talk to somebody about this. Wow! Who knew that?

This week, we are going to look at The Magic Porridge Pot and in 2 weeks times we will have written a great recipe card, to show a family member or friend, how to make porridge! Hope you’ve got your oats in!

Take a look at the recipes' below. It should not take long. What do you notice about them? What is the same/different?

Did you notice that they all have a title, a list of ingredients and a method (this tells you how to make it)?

The Magic Porridge Pot

Listen to this version of the story

What did you like about the story? Why?

Is there anything you did not like? Why?

There are many different versions of the Magic Porridge Pot story. Now listen to this version.

Thinking about this story answer the following questions. It is fine to just talk through this with an adult. You do not have to write your answers down.

Why do you think Mrs Molly looked after the children? What did she do to feed them all?
•Why do you think the old woman left the magic porridge pot behind when she left the house?
Think of some questions you would like to ask the old woman who leaves the porridge pot. Why do you think the author doesn’t tell us much about her?
What different types of food did the magic porridge pot make in the different seasons?
Which food would you have liked best out of the food the porridge pot made? What food would you like the porridge pot to make for you?
Why did Paul wish for cherries? What did you think when Paul spoke his wish aloud?
Why did Paul cry so hard when the porridge pot sm ashed on the floor?

Which story did you enjoy the most? Why was that?

Let's Get Cooking

Today, we are going to make porridge!

It is important that as you make the porridge you take photographs at each stage to help you tomorrow, or you could draw pictures.

Talk about what you are doing.

You will need an adult to help you.

Here is the recipe that we are going to follow:

You can change the recipe if you wish and add other ingredients.

Don’t forget to eat and enjoy.

Remember to help clear away!

How To Make Porridge

Today, we are going to sequence your photos or drawings from yesterday.

If you can, print off your photos and then put them in order.

Talk about the details.

How much porridge did you weigh out?

How did you stir the porridge?

What did you measure the milk in?

If you can’t print photos, don’t worry, look at them at the screen and talk

about the sequence. Ask your child what he/she did first and then show them the photo and talk about it.

Now listen to another version of the story.

How is this one different to the stories

from yesterday? Which one do you like best? Why?

How To Make Porridge 2

Today, to make sure that we really do know how to make porridge we are going to role play making porridge or if you want to, and your adult agrees, you could make some more porridge (make sure you make it following the same instructions so that you don’t get confused). Act out or actually make your porridge again.

Really think and talk about what you are doing: the order you do things in, how you measure and stir and what utensils you use. This will prepare you really well for next week when we write our exciting recipe cards.

Now draw a picture of your favourite part of the porridge making activity.

Can you write one simple sentence to go with your picture.

You could write;

I made tasty porridge.

If you like, you could copy mine or one from an adult.

You can show me these at our online chat on Monday.
