Thursday

Look at the notes you made yesterday about how the crew felt. They have been trapped in the drifting ice for five months!  It was incredibly important for Shackleton to keep his crew’s morale high.

I would like you to write a speech that Shackleton might’ve made to the rest of his crew encouraging them to stay positive and not give up.

Watch these two speeches. The first is from a film called Independence Day and the second one is Barack Obama (the American president before Trump). Think carefully about what makes these speeches motivational. Write down any sentence starters or endings that you think could go into Shackleton’s speech.

Independence Day

Barack Obama

This speech is quite long. If you don't want to watch it all, I would focus on 1.50-3.40, 5.35-6.05, 9.50-10.15, 10.50-11.50 and 14-17.14

How do these speakers get their message across?

Hopefully, you noticed:

  • They use emotive language which is language which stirs (sparks) someone’s feelings and emotions.
  • They changed the volume: some words or phrases are emphasised.
  • Words or phrases were repeated.
  • Memorable slogans were created.
  • Their body language is encouraging: they stand strongly, they smile, they gesture with their hands.
