This week we are going to learn all about dragons.
We will be doing some new activities about dragons and also revisiting some previous class work based on dragons.
A dragon is a mythical creature or beast.
A mythical beast is an imaginary creature.
Some such as the dragon, the griffin or the unicorn have their origin in traditional myth and have at one time been believed to be real creatures.
Throughout history dragons have been seen as good, bad or lucky.
In many books and films dragons are portrayed as being scary and bad - they breath fire and fight knights.
Can you think of any books or films that you have seen with bad dragons in?
Imagine if there was a bad dragon in Hanley Swan and we wanted to catch it, we would have to create a special poster. We would need a wanted poster!

St. George and the Dragon
One of the most famous dragons is in a story about St. George.
St. George is the patron Saint of England and has a special day to celebrate this on 23rd April each year.
Patron saints are chosen as special protectors or guardians over all areas of life.
Traditionally people see them as symbols of how to live a better life.
You can have patron saints of all sorts of things, like jobs, organisations and animals.
For example St Francis of Assisi loved nature and wildlife so he was made the patron saint of animals.
But nations can have patron saints too.
England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales each has their own national day named after their patron saint.

There are many films and books with good dragons in.
Can you think of any good dragons?
One of my favourite films has hunderds of good dragons in, the film is How to Train a Dragon.
Each dragon has a number of different skills and characteristics.
Some of the skills are: breathing fire, breathing ice, creating wind, being strong, fighting with two heads, slowing down time and many more.
Can you create a set of good dragons that have abilities, skills and characteristics?

We are going to put this information onto paper (link below) and create your very own Dragon Top Trump Cards.
Choose at least 3 different characteristics/skills of your dragons. These could be strength, size, height, cuddliness, number of teeth etc.
Then choose a number range. This could be strength between 1 and 100, cuddliness between 1 and 20, teeth between 0 and 50.
On your Top Trump card draw the dragon and then add in the characteristic and a chosen number. Keep the order the same on each card - it makes it easier to play the game.

In many cultures around the world dragons are seen as very lucky and they help scare away bad things.
Can you remember which culture we looked at earlier this year that had dragons in?
It was the Chinese culture when we talked about the Chinese New Year.
One of the most famous images of a Chinese dragon is the dragon with a very long, scaly body.
Can you make your very own Chinese dragon? It has to be friendly, long and scaly.
There are many ways to create a Chinese dragon and, if like me, you are not very creative follow this link for some Google inspiration.

We have looked at a variety of dragons this week and I am sure that you know a lot more.
Can you create your very own puppet story with a dragon or two in?
The dragon can be good, bad or lucky - you decide.
Create your own characters and dragons, use your Chinese Dragon or use the printable ones below.
Think about a storyline and what is going to happen.
Think about where the story will be set and what is in the background.
Think about the ending, will it be happy, sad or exciting.
