Welcome Back Summer Term 2026

A Very Warm Welcome to the Summer Term in Class 3

We are looking ahead to a wonderful term filled with exciting learning opportunities and memorable experiences. From reading and language festivals to cricket coaching, a residential trip to St Briavels, sports days, and summer performances, there is so much for the children to enjoy.

We feel incredibly fortunate to have such amazing children and such supportive parents. Your continued encouragement and involvement play a vital role in making these opportunities possible.

Our familiar routines will continue this term, including weekly spelling tests on Fridays and rewarding children who read regularly at home. Reading remains a key focus, as it is the foundation for learning across all subjects, and we greatly appreciate your support in fostering a love of reading at home.

In class, the children will be exploring a range of rich and engaging topics. In history, we will be learning about King John, while our geography and science learning will focus on the question: How are our oceans changing?

It promises to be a busy, inspiring, and rewarding term for everyone.

Thank you, as always, for your ongoing support—we’re very much looking forward to the exciting weeks ahead.

We will be learning:

Maths

In Years 3 and 4, mathematics teaching builds on pupils’ prior learning and develops confidence, fluency, reasoning, and problem‑solving skills.

Children will deepen their understanding of number, including fractions and decimals, and apply these skills in real‑life contexts such as money and time. They will explore shape, geometry, and measures, learning to describe properties, compare, and calculate with increasing accuracy. Pupils will also develop skills in statistics, including collecting, interpreting, and presenting data using charts and graphs.

In Year 4, pupils will work towards mastering their multiplication tables up to 12 × 12 and will take the statutory Multiplication Tables Check.

English

In Class 3, pupils will plan, draft, edit, and publish a range of written outcomes, including a playscript, a non‑fiction text, and a narrative.

Children will be taught to:

  • Use a rich and varied vocabulary
  • Write in clear paragraphs with cohesive devices
  • Apply accurate punctuation and sentence structures
  • Edit and improve their work independently and collaboratively
  • Develop handwriting fluency and presentation

Spoken language is embedded across all areas, with opportunities for performance, discussion, and presentation.

History

Children will study King John, linking their learning directly to our residential visit to St Briavels Castle.

Children will learn about King John’s reign and his significance in British history, including his role in the Magna Carta.

RE

Children will study the units “Jesus” and “A Better Place”. Through learning about Jesus, children will explore key events from his life, his teachings, and why he is significant to Christians today. Pupils will consider messages of forgiveness, compassion, and love.

The “Better Place” unit encourages pupils to think about what makes a world a better place to live in. Children will explore moral questions, shared values, and how individuals and communities can make positive choices to support others and care for the world around them.

Computing

Children will focus on sound and repetition. Children will learn how sound can be recorded, edited, and used purposefully in digital projects, developing skills in capturing audio and understanding how sound enhances media.

Through the concept of repetition, pupils will be introduced to key ideas in programming. They will learn how repeating instructions (loops) can be used to make programs more efficient and accurate.

PE

Children will take part in cricket and athletics.

In cricket, children will develop key skills such as throwing, catching, batting, and fielding, while learning the importance of teamwork, rules, and fair play.

Through athletics, pupils will build strength, speed, stamina, and coordination by participating in a range of track and field activities, including running, jumping, and throwing. Emphasis is placed on personal improvement, goal‑setting, and celebrating individual and team achievements.

Music

Music teaching follows the Sing Up programme, providing pupils with musical experiences that develop their listening, singing, performing, and composing skills.

Pupils will explore a range of musical styles and traditions through the units Just Three Notes and Samba with Sérgio.

Through Just Three Notes, children will learn how music can be created using a limited number of notes, developing their understanding of pitch, rhythm, and structure.

In Samba with Sérgio, pupils will explore lively samba rhythms, learning about pulse, rhythm, and performance. They will have opportunities to play percussion instruments, perform as part of a group, and experience music from another culture.

Science

In Years 3 and 4, pupils develop their scientific knowledge and enquiry skills through practical investigations, observation, and questioning.

Within the Animals unit, children will learn about the basic needs of animals, including humans, for survival. They will explore nutrition, the importance of a balanced diet, and how animals obtain their food. Pupils will also learn about different types of skeletons and muscles, understanding how these support movement and protection.

Through the Living Things and Their Habitats unit, children will learn how to group and classify living things, explore a range of habitats, and understand how living things depend on each other. Children will study food chains, identify producers, predators, and prey.

Art & DT

Children will explore Making Animated Drawings, where they develop their understanding of movement, sequence, and storytelling through art. They will experiment with drawing techniques, mark‑making, and simple animation ideas to bring their artwork to life.

In DT, children will focus on Mechanisms – Story Books, where they design and create interactive books using simple mechanical systems such as levers, sliders, and pivots.

PSHE

We will be covering the Relationships unit, where children explore what makes healthy, positive relationships. Pupils learn about friendships, family relationships, teamwork, trust, and ways to resolve conflict respectfully. They are encouraged to recognise their own feelings, understand the feelings of others, and develop empathy, honesty, and kindness.

In the Changing Me unit, pupils learn about personal growth and change in an age‑appropriate and supportive way. Children explore how they have changed over time, both physically and emotionally, and learn about managing feelings, setting goals, and keeping themselves safe and healthy.
