  • Monthly Monday Maweni Market

    Sun 17 Apr 2016
This is a new and exciting entrepreneurial fundraising venture we are taking part in this year.

Each class has borrowed £10 from Mr Pratley and they have to use it wisely to make money for our friends in Maweni primary school.

The concept is simple - create something to sell at a school market. What will they sell? Which class will raise the most?

Class 1 will start the venture on the 25th April at 3:15pm. Please come along, bring some money and support the fundraiser.

    Class 1's Maweni Market
On Monday 25th April Hanley Swan C of E Primary School saw the making of 15 budding entrepreneurs. Each class has been set the challenge of using £10 to raise as much money as possible for their partner school, Maweni Primary in Tanzania. The reception children decided to use their money to buy ingredients for a milkshake bar as well as bringing in toys, books, cakes and organising a small raffle for parents. The children who are all 4 & 5 years old wrote letters asking for donations for the raffle, organised how much milk was needed, created the stalls and signs and advertised the event.
The event was a roaring success and the children made an amazing £250 for Maweni, which will be used to rebuild a classroom roof after it was badly damaged during a recent storm.
Following the event the class counted the money and wrote thank you letters to the businesses that supported the raffle, Hanley Swan Village shop and butchers, Caravan stuff 4 U, Meridian Packaging and the Swan Inn.
The children were enthusiastic and excited throughout. It was an amazing project and the children really rose to the challenge.
  • Africa Week

    Mon 01 Feb 2016
We have planned an African enrichment week.  The children will be mixing up with each class spending the afternoons in their family groups.  The teachers have planned African based workshops based around animals, music, art, Maasai warriors, the Swahili language and much more.  It is going to a great week that will really enhance our link with the children and Maweni.

On Monday 8th February at 9.15am we would like to invite you in to our open classroom event where we will be displaying the amazing activities that we have been working on.  We hope to see you there!
  • School Theatre Trips

    Sun 17 Jan 2016
    Class 1 & 2
On Tuesday class 1 and 2 had an amazing adventure, they visited Africa and Birmingham all in one day!! We arrived in Africa just after 10:00am and the children were welcomed by a Kenyan Massai Warrior (with a real spear!!). He guided us into an African Safari and from there the children went off in groups spotting 100s of African animals. Giraffes towering over us eating bamboo. Gorillas perched on top of waterfalls. Crocodiles hiding in the swamps waiting to eat badly behaved children. Ostriches, flamingos, cheetahs, lions and herds of elephants all watching the children as they passed by. Following this the Massai Warrior invited us into his restaurant and talked about life in Kenya/Tanzania, being a Massai and he even had time to teach us some Swahili before we had lunch.

In the afternoon we had a short trip across Europe and finally arrived in a cold damp Birmingham. The children took their seats in the Town Hall and we were taken on a fabulous adventure to find a bear in Michael Rosen’s ‘We’re going on a Bear Hunt’. The children (and adults) were thoroughly entrained as the family in the story travelled through long wavy grass, swam through a deep cold river, squelched through thick oozy mud to find the big brown bear! It was a creative, imaginative, funny and exciting show and the children loved it, especially when they were sprayed with water!!

    Class 3 & 4
‘Yesterday Classes 3 and 4 went to see Wendy and Peter Pan at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford, it was amazing! It was the best play we have ever seen. The setting was extremely clever; our favourite bit was the flying actors and the crocodile walking doing the splits. The production was a real pleasure to watch. We would recommend this strongly to other people. If you ever want to watch an amazing play, go to the Royal Shakespeare Company.’
    Katie and Imogen, Class 4

A huge thank you to the PFA for heavily subsidising both trips and an even bigger thank you to the children whose behaviour was impeccable. Every one of them was a credit to the school and their families.

  • Malvern Lantern Parade 2015

    Mon 23 Nov 2015

Our whole school have been very busy today constructing and decorating the lanterns in preparation for the Malvern Town Christmas light switch on parade this Saturday.

The theme this year is 'Under the Sea' and in Class 2 we have enjoyed making our lantern into a large shiny fish!

  • Amazing Africa!

    Wed 18 Nov 2015
Thank you to all of the families that came along after school on Tuesday to hear about Mrs Price and Mrs Harrison’s time at Maweni. It was lovely to see so many of you there. The presentation informed every one of the success of the current projects and how we are looking to develop our partnership even more. At the end people got to taste some ouji, pea and tomato soup (with rice and chapattis) and Tangawizi. Thank you to Mrs Price and Mrs Harrison for all of their hard work in putting the afternoon together.
  • Jambo! From Tanzania!

    Mon 19 Oct 2015

We are having an awesome time already here in Tanga.  We finally arrived at our hotel yesterday (Sunday) at 3.30pm.  It was a very long journey all in all.  We were greeted at the airport by our friend Wallace, who as usual has been a terrific host so far.

Today was our first day in school and from the second that our car door opened we were welcomed with open arms.  An elaborate entertainment show was put on for us with singing, dancing and many, many smiles. Mrs Harrison and I had a good African bum wiggle along with the children and teachers! Well, it would have been rude not to!!

The chicken shed was officially opened today too.  We had red ribbon to cut and a big crowd to work!  We are pleased to report back that the shed is very accommodating for the 59 chickens that currently live there. They are very happy chickens and are already laying eggs that the villagers are buying. Sustainability at it's best!  We were even lucky enough to try the eggs for breakfast...nom nom!

Tomorrow we are planning to paint the murals on the walls and will report back on this soon.

We we hope to find you all well in chilly England! (We better not tell you that it is hotter than usual here and we have enjoyed a 34c temperature today, ha ha).

  • Digital Awareness

    Sun 17 May 2015
Over the past few months the staff have noted a number of conversations between children about their digital activities that could be deemed as inappropriate. Therefore we would like to take this opportunity to offer support to anyone who is unsure about digital media and offer some simple advice to empower parents to proactively supervise their children’s online / digital activities and to help keep them safe.

This letter is designed to strengthen and reinforce the safety messages that your child receives in school.

When we talk about digital media we are referring to anything digital… computers, tablets, phones, TV’s, game stations etc. They are all very useful and have a place in our lives; we just have to be careful about their use.

    Content

You need to make sure that you have adequately researched what your child is using and that you are happy with the content. I know from previous experience that what seems fine at first can often have inappropriate content and this can often have a negative impact on the child. This could be a set of videos on ‘Youtube’, a new ‘app’ for their tablet or a game for their game station. When it comes to games it is easy – just look at the PEGI (Pan European Gaming Information) rating. This will tell you the age rating for the game. For example PEGI 3 is a game for all ages like Mario Kart or Sonic etc, PEGI 18 is for adults because of its levels of violence and language , these are games like Call of Duty or Grand Theft Auto. There are also ratings in between these two. For more information visit their website at: www.pegi.info.

Also do not forget also that all new digital devices have access to the internet and through this link children can send and receive messages. These can be part of ‘Social Media’ such as Face Book (children should be at least 13 before using this independently) or through instant messaging whilst playing a huge variety of games. The children will be able to talk to other players, so be aware that anyone could be contacting your child through this service and if your child is accessing adult games think about the kind of language they may come in contact with.
If your child is allowed to message (this could also be text messaging) then make sure you know some of the acronyms that are used – if you have never looked at these then prepared to be shocked, it is like a new language that is developing and evolving all the time. For an extensive list then go to www.safesurfingkids.com/chat_room_internet_acronyms.htm.

For online content keep on top of what your child is using by checking regularly (including browsing history), not letting them use digital media in their bedrooms - keep it in the family rooms and above all talk to your child about what they are using.
If you are concerned then do not forget that all digital media has some sort of ‘Parental Control’ that you can set up.
For more information visit the web safety page on our website or look at www.thinkyouknow.co.uk.

    Time
The children of this generation are known as ‘Digital natives’ because they have been immersed in all things digital since their birth. However this does not mean it is healthy or educational to spend too much time on digital activities. The children should be taught when it is a good time to use their devices and how long is appropriate. This will vary from family to family but is an important conversation to have regularly and will help you as they grow older and their need to be digital increases.
